When shopping for carpet, you will probably hear many different terms around the subject. One of them is a carpet “pile.” What is a carpet pile? Let’s answer that question today.
Information you need
The word pile refers to the actual fibers of the carpet. This is in terms of the fibers’ length. When you have a low carpet pile, the fibers are only a quarter of an inch long. A medium pile is a quarter and a half inches tall. A high pile is between one-half and three-quarters of an inch long.
With a low-cut pile, the carpet is tightly woven together, making it easier to vacuum, and it traps far less pet dander and dust. However, as the pile increases in length, more cleaning is necessary to maintain a deep-down clean, meaning that it takes more cleaning to eliminate odors and bacteria.
On the flip side, when the carpet fibers are longer and they approach a shag carpet, its characteristics change. The softer the carpet will be. It will be more comfortable underfoot. It will show fewer footprints.
